I’m Not Okay with Chris Brown Performing at the Grammys and I’m Not Sure Why You Are

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter published a very comprehensive article on the various viewpoints out there on this issue and why Chris Brown’s apology hasn’t convinced most. Taking into account their observations on Brown’s terrible post-incident behavior, I definitely feel less sympathy for Brown now. (Feb 17, 2012)

Just to qualify: I personally have a more forgiving attitude towards Chris Brown than Ms. Palsuka, because he did turn himself in and serve his sentence, and that really must be affirmed. He should be allowed to continue sharing his talent with the world, on the Grammys and elsewhere. I also have a more forgiving attitude towards the other celebrities who said “I don’t wish to comment, it’s not my place” because in their shoes, in the public eye, I don’t think I would’ve felt comfortable doing that either—it would feel too much like gossiping. However, I share her concern about the possible societal consensus that’s formed around the “I don’t know, this is their business, maybe she pushed him over the edge” narrative. No matter how “out of line” someone might be, man or woman, you do not raise your hand and hit them with the intention to harm them. If you do, in the heat of anger, you admit your mistake and serve your time. Chris Brown did that, good on him. Awarding second chances and refraining from gossip are noble practices, and I believe they can be done alongside taking a firm stance against domestic violence. They must be.
